MUSIC FOR FILMS

Adnan Joubran’s approach to film scoring is rooted in a deeply cinematic sensibility that extends beyond music alone. Before dedicating himself fully to his musical career, his initial ambition was to become a film director. He studied cinema and cinematography, developing an understanding of visual language, narrative structure, and the emotional power of imagery — foundations that continue to shape his work as a composer.

This dual perspective allows Joubran to approach film music not as accompaniment, but as an integral narrative voice. His compositions are guided by an acute awareness of rhythm in editing, the weight of silence, and the subtle interplay between image and sound. Rather than illustrating a scene, his music inhabits it — expanding its emotional depth while preserving its fragility.

His work as a film composer includes contributions to several internationally recognized and award-winning productions, among them the Oscar-nominated Five Broken Cameras, as well as Le Dernier Vol, Adieu Gary, and The Last Friday. Across these projects, his scores demonstrate a refined balance between intimacy and scale.

Drawing from his deep roots in traditional music, Joubran often incorporates the oud as a central expressive voice when the narrative calls for it, bringing an organic, human texture to the screen. At the same time, he seamlessly merges these elements with modern sound design, subtle electronics, and contemporary compositional techniques, creating a dialogue between heritage and innovation. This ability to move fluidly between worlds allows his music to adapt with precision to each film’s emotional and visual language.

Through this convergence of cinematic vision, traditional mastery, and contemporary expression, Adnan Joubran has developed a distinctive voice in film scoring — one that prioritizes emotion, space, and the invisible threads that connect what we see to what we feel.

“Adnan Joubran is a brilliant musician, a master of his instrument but also fully aware of the possibilities of recording and sonic manipulation that can extend it into the future as well as the past and present. His own music has a great range and depth and he seems to me to be among the most atmospheric composers working.” Brian Eno
